about

After his debut album “Cruise Utopia” released in 2020 on Passat Continu, the electronic composer Canaan Balsam signs its second venture in ambient and new age soundscapes through Dreamwreck, a not so unexpected collaboration with Cosima Cobley Carr, with whom he had already worked before, counting several features in Cruise Utopia. Dreamwreck combines ethereal electronic soundscapes with traditional instrumentation and collage elements, including melodic vocals, spoken word, found or archival sounds and field recordings.

Through the calming, angelic vocals of Cobley Carr, Death Drive is a four-track ambient piece that transports us to our deepest dreams, only brought back to reality by calming but nonetheless assertive declamations from the English artist.

The EP names itself after a concept derived from psychoanalysis – “Faced with destructive behaviour and elements in our psychological experience which seem to work against us, Freud inferred the idea of an essentially destructive instinct that underlies human psychology” - says Cosima Cobley Carr.

Each track of this album reflects on human behaviour, such as the ever-morphing relationships in “Fade to Fade”, the uncanny presence of death and destruction in life in “Appears to be Living”, and the lament to a life of self-medicating in “Pills”.

“Dreamwreck comes from the idea of the remnants of the subconscious that appear in the mind, such as in dreams. The therapist uses these remnants like clues, attempting to understand what lies underneath the surface of a client’s consciousness. Like a shipwreck, the recollection of dreams reveals a life lived, it’s history and secrets, as well as the reasons for parts of it becoming hidden and submerged in the depths.” – says Cosima Cobley Carr.

A journey between the conscious and the unconscious, the listener will be guaranteed a new, undiscovered setting within his mind, as well as a second chapter for the fans of the duo who had already discovered its uniqueness in Cruise Utopia’s “Life is a Horizontal Fall” or “One Rat Short of a Plague”.

Balsam has collaborated with several contemporary artists including Calvin Z Laing as well as experimental musician Dan Mutch. His audiovisual work has been exhibited at the Embassy Gallery in Edinburgh. Cosima Cobley Carr has a vast repertoire across different formats, with several exhibits across the UK, including at the Barbican and Fruitmarket Gallery.

Dreamwreck’s recent performances have included joining Damo Suzuki (Can) as part of his Sound Carriers Project and performing at Yinka Shonibare’s artist-led space Guest Projects (Hackney, London) for the launch of curatorial collective Concrete Assembly’s exhibition Hush Hush: Conversations with Myself.
